The Rise of the World Government[/b]
Historians now trace the origins of the World Government back to the years leading up to the Third World War. In 2956 AD, a growing push for denationalization and global unity caused the waning power of the United Nations to embark on a series of unification negotiations. The general atmosphere promoted unity…but only as far as continents. With its lack of political influence, the UN was merely able to negotiate the dissolution of European borders. The European Union, previously just allied countries, took over all of Europe under one autonomous government. The Asian Unification and the American Unification went less smoothly. While Russia and China bickered over power distribution, Japan and Australia announced their intention to unify with the United States. The Philippines, Mexico, and Chile all ceased negotiations with the United States to protest Japan and Korea’s inclusion. When the unification proceeded as planned, Mexico retaliated by unifying with Cuba, Canada, and Chile against the United States-Japan-Korea triumvirate.
Sensing the rising threat to power, Russia dropped its disputes with China in 2961 and unified immediately. Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia all promptly joined that alliance. With the sudden ascension of the Asian Conglomerate, the North American Coalition brokered deals with the newly formed South American Union and the newly formed Central American Union, becoming simply the American Coalition. After assimilating these two unions, the American Coalition was practically equal in power to the Asian Conglomerate. By 2963, Africa was still disjointed and splintered by two movements: the Muslim Unification and the South African Alliance. With tensions running high, the American Coalition and the Asian Conglomerate circled each other warily as the European Union gained power in 2966 by annexing Norway, Switzerland, Ukraine, Iceland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, and Serbia and Montenegro as well as most other non-EU members. This annexation added tremendous power and influence to the European Union, making them the third power-player in the world. At this point, each remaining country, which had held out against unification, realized it would be swallowed up if it did not make connections quickly. This realization prompted a flow of petitions to join the various unions.
By December of 2968, in a flurry of activity, the Asian Conglomerate orchestrated the integration of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkey into their fold. When the Muslim Unification demanded that the South African Alliance join them or face war in June of 2969, the American Coalition, spying an opportunity to counter the Asian Conglomerate’s increase in power, leapt to the defense of the South African Alliance. In an effort to prevent domination, the European Union supported the Muslim Unification. The South African Alliance eagerly accepted the American Coalition’s invitation to join, making it into the United Coalition. The Muslim Unification reacted by unifying themselves with the European Union. By this point, every country in the world had unified with one of the three major factions. After 10 years in a three-way standoff, the European Union split in 2980. Nearly one-half of the countries, including the former Germany and the former Norway, followed France in a split from the remaining faction supporting Italy along with England and Sweden. With this event upsetting the world balance, the schism was further widened when the United Coalition expressed their support for the Italian faction. When the Asian Conglomerate expressed their support for the French faction, the stress was too much; war broke out in 2982. What started as skirmishes between French Union armies and Italian Union armies escalated as the larger United Coalition and Asian Conglomerate began to contribute money and weaponry. Both the Asian Conglomerate and the French Union targeted their attacks at the center of the United Coalition: the former United States. Although disarmament had been suggested for over a century, nothing had ever been done. Nuclear and chemical weapons detonated all across the North American Continent, turning the once-fertile land into a scorched desert. The flood of refugees from the North American Continent spread to all unified countries, mostly to South America. The Asian Conglomerate destroyed the United Coalition’s primary stock of weapons in their preemptive strike. In an effort to retaliate, the United Coalition mounted a full-scale assault on the former countries of Cuba, Mexico, Chile, and Canada. The Asian Conglomerate continued its extensive bombing, expanding the desolation to South America as well. The power of the United Coalition was crushed in 2985 by the allied might of two superpowers and their supporters. Fearing obliteration, the Italian faction of the former European Union petitioned for re-unification with the French faction in 2986. Under stringent terms, the other faction accepted, and the European Union was re-formed. With all of North America desolated, the non-American members of the United Coalition launched a campaign against the Asian Conglomerate. Operating from the base of Japan, which had extensive anti-missile protection, the United Coalition fought on. They seemed able to hold off the attacks of the Asian Conglomerate, until the New World Order arose in 2988.
The New World Order was a religious faction, born from the ashes of the Vatican in Italy. It used a holy text called the “Orderi Sancti,” or “Sacred Order.” According to its dogma, the priests were blessed with supernatural power, like those to call fireballs to explode tanks or mighty winds to throw planes from the sky. The European Union guarded the New World Order carefully, keeping them out of the embroiling conflict. Religious fervor spread across the world by the teachings of the New World Order. Millions converted in months. The people of the United Coalition rejected the doctrines unequivocally. The members of the European Union and Asian Conglomerate embraced the teachings whole-heartedly. By 2990, the New World Order had over 6 billion adherents worldwide and over 2 billion cathedrals spread across its area of influence. In 2991, the Asian Conglomerate felt it could not destroy the remnants of the United Coalition without a long and costly war, so it petitioned the New World Order for a holy order condemning the United Coalition. The First Cardinal accepted the petition on the condition that the European Union and the Asian Conglomerate unite as the World Government. The two Unifications agreed, and the First Cardinal declared all United Coalitionists “enemies of the Religion.” With that declaration of 2992, the Priests of the Order fought on behalf of the World Government armies, decimating the United Coalitionists with their divinely given powers over the world. The remnant of the United Coalition, now calling themselves the Resistance, splintered in 2993, fleeing across the world to establish secret bases and begin guerilla warfare. Their intelligence network and supply lines are totally secret from the World Government, and the Resistance members try to live double lives. Now, 13 years later, the Resistance has gained power, using psychics to combat the deadly Priests of Order. With the resurgence of support for the Resistance, many feel the time has come when the World Government will no longer hold absolute sway over the lives of its citizens.
