Memories of a Speaker:[/u]
November 17, 2992-
So, it has come at last. The Nexus has long been told of the imminent threat posed to us by the World Government. The wisdom of our leaders dictated we form an alliance with the World Government to ensure our own survival. But Fate cannot be cheated, it seems, even by psychics. With the rising power of this “religion” which calls itself the New World Order, the Word Government has gone crawling on its knees like a dog to beg their aid in the extermination of the Resistance. Pathetic fools, they honestly believe the doctrines and so-called divine powers of these charlatans can win them the war. If they knew what we do, they would not be so eager for their aid.
This deceitful religion has made only two stipulations on their aid; that alone should cause the World Government to fear, but they are too stupid to understand when they are being used. We have used them for years, and they never began to realize it. The First Cardinal, or so the religious call him, has stipulated the unification of the European Union and the Asian Conglomerate. Obviously, this move was engineered to give the New World Order a larger following and more control. The second stipulation was the extermination of all abominations possessing psychic powers. The hypocrites. They fear the knowledge we possess, and they know we can bring them down because of it.
The World Government accepted their offer, striking panic to the very heart of the Nexus. Prescients said it was only a matter of time before the strikes against psychics begin. They were right, as always. Psychics are only human, but why we distrust the very powers that set us apart is a mystery common to all humanity. The foretellings were disregarded and countered in discussion…until the first attack. The World Government gave the New World Order the location of the newly founded Nexicana, the one place psychics felt safe: their own capital city. The priests attacked without warning, “teleporting” in using their so-called holy powers. Had their powers truly been otherworldly, we would have at least had warning, but such is their deception. Using their “holy fire” and “righteous lightning,” the priests devastated a full quarter of Nexicana before the psychics could regroup. The New World Order reports that it sent a mere 2,000 priests into the city, returning with 1,842 of them still alive for “such is the righteous cause and holy justice of the Religion.” But those who know the truth say otherwise. A full 300,000-priest army attacked Nexicana that day. Only 1,842 returned. But in the battle, Nexicana was completely destroyed. Of the 200,000 psychics living in Nexicana, only 1,228 psychics escaped. The World Government’s betrayal accomplished its goal. So, the Nexus vanished into hidden bases and unknown territory to evade the hunting priests.
They thought they had eliminated us. They were quite wrong. Exactly one week after the treacherous attack on Nexicana, a psychic army attacked Cape Unity, a crucial World Government base on the tip of Africa. Ten thousand psychics attacked a highly fortified, government-protected base of over 500,000 troops. They razed the base to the ground. Then, the Nexus vanished once again. They will regret turning on us.
April 4, 3006-
It has been almost 14 years since the attack on Nexicana. The World Government has had ample time and innumerable losses to regret their decision. Psychics have been crucial elements in many World Government leader assassinations as well as military defeat. We have had our losses as well, but for the most part, we remained hidden and secure. This security changed when the First Cardinal announced he had had a vision. Posturing fool that he is, he worded it so elaborately and so divinely that most of the world scratched its head in confusion…before they bowed the knee and gave over 400 billion units for the sacred offering. But the World Government understood perfectly: the priests have now been “blessed” with the ability to detect psychics by their mere presence. We lost hundreds of spies in a matter of weeks. Our numbers have steadily decreased. It was then the Commune decided to seek the aid of the Resistance.
Many in the Nexus objected to an alliance with non-psychics, fearing a repeat of our betrayal 13 years ago. But all agreed a course of action had to be taken, or we would face obliteration at the hands of the New World Order. So with much discussion, a delegation was sent to rendezvous with a team of Resistance operative on neutral territory. There, the delegation brokered an agreement. Though many in the Nexus still dislike working with non-psychics, we have maintained amiable relations so far. Often however, the Resistance tends to think of us as their elite squad and thinks it can just dispatch us on whatever mission it wants. We have had to correct that misapprehension several times. They easily forget we allied out of necessity, rather than friendship. We do not like working with them, but we know it is necessary for the accomplishment of our mutual goals. So far, we have found them an aid to our cause and therefore have continued relations. The Nexus is in a divided state on this issue, something psychics cannot maintain for long. We might tip the balance one way or the other. I believe the next few years will greatly determine the course of history, for psychics and humans alike…
*Note: It is quite common for members of the Commune to record their thoughts for future Speakers. Speakers do not keep diaries in the physical sense but instead use a psychic technique of anchoring their thoughts to a specific psychic, called a Keeper, in the Nexus. Keepers are given the means to unlock this node, guarding a psychic history of the Speakers’ long gone. A non-psychic has no chance of obtaining this record, and the Keepers are highly vigilant about access to the Records. Keepers typically only let Speakers access the Records, though certain Records (like these above) are available to all for the education of the Nexus.
